Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
