The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Haze After Celebrations
On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" level.
Alarming Pollution Readings
Several parts of Delhi recorded an AQI over 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy levels.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that covers the metropolis as the cold season begins.
Yet earlier this year, the newly elected regional government appealed to the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".
Legal Verdict and Reality
To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, the court approved the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated periods throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Many air quality sensors throughout the capital showed contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe levels seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Regional Implications
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also initiated a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the festivities.
Chronic Pollution Problem
The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the city have continued as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.
During the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the air has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Contamination Sources
The situation in Delhi is attributed to a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.
Medical and Economic Toll
Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing 10,000 early deaths per year in the capital.
