Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
